Youth Development

Investing in the future.

Many of NGC’s CSI projects are specifically targeted at the youth of communities as we believe that it is important to give them a healthy outlet for developing talents, building self-confidence and interacting with others.

Our work with the youth of Trinidad and Tobago is focused on sport; the arts and culture; education and training; and holistic development.

Sport: NGC’s involvement with sport ranges from the construction of facilities and the sponsorship of teams to the hosting of tournaments.

Sports

NGC is the mainstay of support for the Primary Schools Track and Field Games in the Moruga Zone and the St. Patrick and Caroni Districts; and co-sponsors the Track and Field Championships of the National Association of Athletics Administration (NAAA).

Although we provide an opportunity for competition, our main interest is to promote training in the field of sport. The NGC Right on Track Coaching Caravan implements a science-based, developmental programme that exposes boys and girls of 8-19 years to the skill sets needed in Track and Field and Basketball.  The track and field component was sanctioned by NACAC and introduced in four countries of the eastern Caribbean.

NGC has also been highly involved in cricket. Since 2012, NGC has been a sponsor of the Trinidad and Tobago cricket team and the official T20 partner of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and its developmental programmes. This is part of NGC’s wider objective to develop cricket at the youth club and national levels.

The Arts and Culture: Our support of the arts goes hand in hand with our belief in the holisitic development of youth and, often, with the preservation of national culture.

The Arts and Culture

NGC has a long history of promoting the arts among the youth and this tradition continues today with our longstanding sponsorship of programmes such as the San Fernando Junior Arts Festival (SANFEST), the St. Augustine Chamber Orchestra and, in 2013 the Junior Panorama.

Education and Training: Our commitment to youth education takes many forms ranging from direct financial contributions which assist schools with projects to sponsoring educational organisations.

Education

NGC is a proud sponsor of the ‘Reading to Learn’ Programme in the communities of Beetham, Morvant, Laventille and Tobago. The programme is designed to improve literacy in the primary schools.

One of our major educational drives is our sponsorship of the NIHERST National Science Centre which promotes scientific awareness in a fun and engaging manner. NGC has sponsored the Science Centre since its inception and continues to take part in all of its major activities, including the popular SciTechKnoFest.

Police Youth Club Involvement: We support programmes that expose the youth to a range of uplifting experiences.

Police Youth Club Involvement

As part of developing the nation’s youth, NGC sponsors five police youth clubs in Couva, Penal, La Brea, Beetham and Laventille Road. These clubs service “high risk” communities and give young residents the opportunity to study, socialise and take part in extra-curricular activities. Our support is aimed at empowering young residents by giving them access to a wide variety of uplifting activities.

Over the years, NGC has supported the Youth Training Centre (YTC) through financial donations. In 2012, we sponsored the refurbishment of the YTC multi-purpose Sports Facility. The refurbishment included resurfacing the gymnasium, upgrading the lighting and washroom facilities, replacing the roof and improving the ventilation. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Commissioner of Prisons, Martin Martinez, said “This is an avenue not to develop sporting prowess in the lads. This is an avenue to develop their skills, their personality, their discipline, their sense of self-esteem, to help them remain grounded and to help them remain focused.”
